Gang history\, tattoos\, hand signs\, colors\, codes\, graffiti and criminal activity are presented through the use of PowerPoint\, lecture and video presentation. This course is designed to give a basic working knowledge of gangs and the basic ability to recognize and properly identify a street gang member. An overview of how to conduct a gang investigation through the exploitation of confidential informants\, sources of income and the targeting of hierarchy is explained in detail. This specialized training provides officers\, EMT’s and fire safety personnel tools and resources to effectively manage potentially difficult situations with these citizens. \n​During this training\, officers will learn and understand the common characteristics and behaviors often displayed by those with developmental disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders. Included throughout the day principles\, tactics and techniques that will help 1st Responders deal with those with ASD\, mental retardation\, Down syndrome\, history of brain injuries\, emotional disorders\, situational anxiety\, or those experiencing psychological or physical trauma. \nThe course will review: \nSocialization difficulties and people with ASD including their often not understanding appropriate or safe responses\nDealing with someone exhibiting difficulty with expressive and receptive language and interpreting non-verbal cues\nBeing familiar with repetitive behaviors\, self-stimulatory movements\, organizing behaviors common with ASD\nRecognizing and responding to communication challenges\, such as lack of eye contact\, unusual tone of voice\, disassociated speech – seemingly meaningless answers\, delayed responses\, and unusual balance or gait\nThe Autism Directive Cycle (ADC) aka the Crisis Directive Cycle (CDC)\nOfficer Presence and nonverbal communication to those with cognitive developmental delays\nOfficer Safety\nMedical Precautions\nTechniques for responding to people with ASD and other intellectual and developmental disabilities \n “People with developmental disabilities are at least 7 times more likely to attract the attention of the police\, because their unique communication styles and social characteristics may frighten or disturb some people” (Curry K\, Posluszny M.\, Kraska S\, 1993).
